Frequently Asked Questions

What is Capoeira Angola?

Capoeira Angola is an Afro-Brazilian cultural art form that combines movement, music, history, and philosophy. It originated among enslaved Africans in Brazil as a form of resistance and resilience. It’s not just a martial art — it’s a practice of rhythm, flow, and presence.

Do I need to be in shape or have experience to join?

No experience or level of fitness is required. Our classes are beginner-friendly and focus on helping you build strength, coordination, and confidence over time. Come as you are.

What should I wear?

Participants are encouraged to wear loose-fitting clothing that allows for fluid movement. Yoga pants are not recommended. Regular students are required to wear a uniform shirt, symbolizing unity and commitment.

Do I have to do partner work or can I do it by myself?

Training on your own is actually encouraged when not in class, but you will get the full benefits from training with a partner. Most classes you will end up training with multiple partners. This allows you to understand yourself more as you interact with more people.

Is Capoeira dangerous? Will I get hurt?

Like any physical activity, there is always some risk, but Capoeira Angola emphasizes control, awareness, and respect. We create a safe and supportive learning environment for all levels.

What happens in a typical class?

Each class includes a warm-up, movement training (ginga, kicks, dodges), partner work, and music (singing and instruments). We also learn the cultural context and philosophy behind the art.

Do I have to sing or play instruments?

Not at first — but over time, yes. Music is an essential part of Capoeira Angola. We’ll introduce you gradually to singing and learning instruments like the berimbau, pandeiro, and atabaque.

How often should I come to class?

We recommend coming at least once or twice (3 times is the best!) a week to build rhythm and consistency. The more regularly you train, the deeper your connection to the art will grow.

Do you offer a trial class?

Yes! We offer a discounted two-week intro period so you can explore Capoeira Angola and see if it’s right for you. Book now!

Who teaches the class?

Classes are led by Instrutor Peixe, a dedicated practitioner with over a decade of experience in Capoeira. Our community is rooted in respect, resilience, and rhythm. Check out the full bio.
