A Beginner’s Guide to Capoeira Angola in Orlando

At Capoeira Angola Palmares Orlando, we welcome beginners ages 13 and up. You don’t need martial arts, dance, or music experience to start.

Classes are led by Professor Peixe, with a teaching lineage rooted in Mestre Nô and Mestre Nozinho. We learn movement, music, partner work, history, and philosophy together.

The art and its roots

Capoeira Angola is an Afro-Brazilian cultural practice shaped by resistance and resilience. Its history is part of what we study.

You’ll explore ginga, the shifting movement that provides a foundation for the game, and esquivas, or evasions. In the roda, two people carry on a conversation through movement while music guides the game. Listening matters: to the rhythm, your partner, and the people around you.

Your first class

Our 90-minute classes include warm-ups, foundational movements, partner practice, and music, alongside cultural context. Partner work helps you develop awareness of distance, timing, and another person’s responses.

We introduce singing and instruments gradually. You don’t need to know the songs or play an instrument before joining. Give yourself time to become familiar with the movements, rhythms, and people you train with.

What to wear

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and flat shoes. You don’t need your own instruments or special equipment. Regular students wear a uniform shirt.

Let Professor Peixe know about any injuries before class. Capoeira involves physical risk; our practice emphasizes control, awareness, and respect.
